Singers with Special Needs

Classes for students with Autism Spectrum Disorder or developmental delays.

Lori Van Lenten (teacher and Founding Artistic Director) is fully committed to providing Augusta’s Unique Learners with an opportunity to have a wonderful music experience and throughout her teaching experiences she has seen how music has helped all children develop fine and gross motor skills, critical thinking skills, impulse control, creativity, and emotional development.  Not to leave out the fact that it is just pure JOY.

Lori has found that many parents hear “music class” and think that their child needs to already be a great singer, or already has skills to play instruments. THIS IS NOT TRUE!!! Please click on this link to read some Frequently Asked Questions about our program to help you decide which class is right for your singer.

MELODY MAKERS – Developmental Music class for all ages and a parent/guardian.

During these classes you and your child will have the opportunity to have fun, be silly, and make some music together. The season tuition of $195 for 9 classes will include the cost of the class, a VOCE T-shirt for the child, and a musical instrument.  The instrument will change each VOCE season.  The classes are located at the VOCE Studio at 118 N. Belair Rd in Evans, and meets one Sunday a month for the school year from 3:45pm-4:30pm.

RISING STARS – Performance oriented class for more independent unique learners.

This class is designed to serve our community of unique learners that fall between a developmental music class and the more structured age and ability based classes like PRIMO and Advanced Ensemble. Rising Stars meets one Sunday a month for the school year from 4:30pm – 5:15pm. Singers of all voice types (boys and girls at any stage in their voice change) will have the opportunity to learn different types of music, have fun learning music reading skills, play instruments, and move to our favorite songs! Rising Stars are invited to sing at a Holiday Tea in December, VOCE’s Spring Concert, and some other possible performances around town.  The performance element is there to encourage, not stress out these singers. Performances are not mandatory. We say they are INVITED because they are welcome to decline participating in performances if they are not comfortable performing for an audience. It is important to VOCE that the opportunity is there if these singers want it.  Your Tuition of $195 includes the cost of 9 rehearsals, a VOCE t-shirt, and class materials.

VOCE’s programs have also been approved for financial support through Serenity Behavioral Health Services. Contact their offices for more information and to apply.
